What Are Characters?

Characters are the people, animals or imaginary creatures that take part in a story.

There are different types of characters.

Main Character

The main character is the person or animal the story is mostly about.

The story often follows this character from beginning to end.

Supporting Characters

Supporting characters help move the story forward.

They may help or challenge the main character.

Example

In a story about a young inventor:

  • Main Character: Ava
  • Supporting Characters: Her teacher, classmates and parents

What Is the Setting?

The setting tells us where and when a story happens.

It may include:

  • the place,
  • the time,
  • the weather,
  • and the surroundings.

Examples

Time

  • many years ago

The setting helps readers imagine the events more clearly.

What Is the Theme?

The theme is the main message, lesson or big idea of a story.

It tells readers what the author wants them to learn.

  • Kindness makes a difference.
  • Hard work leads to success.
  • Friendship requires trust.
  • Courage helps us overcome challenges.
  • Teamwork makes difficult tasks easier.

A story may have more than one theme.

Read the short story.

Lena loved painting. Although she entered an art competition for the first time and felt nervous, she practised every afternoon. On the day of the competition, she painted confidently and won second place. Lena realised that effort and perseverance were more important than being perfect.

Theme

Hard work and perseverance lead to improvement and success.
