π Introduction
Have you ever come across a new word while reading and wondered how to pronounce it or what it means?
Good readers do more than recognise wordsβthey know how to sound them out and understand their meanings. This is where phonics and vocabulary become important.
Phonics helps us connect letters and sounds so we can read unfamiliar words correctly. Vocabulary gives us the meanings of words, allowing us to understand stories, articles and conversations more easily.
In this lesson, you’ll discover how phonics and vocabulary work together to make you a stronger, more confident reader.
π― What You’ll Learn
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
- explain the meaning of phonics and vocabulary.
- recognise common letter patterns and sounds.
- use context clues to understand unfamiliar words.
- expand your vocabulary for better reading and communication.
π‘ Let’s Explore
What Is Phonics?
Phonics is the relationship between letters and the sounds they make.
Knowing phonics helps us pronounce unfamiliar words correctly.
Examples
| Letters | Sound | Example |
|---|---|---|
| sh | /sh/ | ship, shark |
| ch | /ch/ | chair, chocolate |
| th | /th/ | think, thumb |
| ph | /f/ | phone, photograph |
| ea | /ee/ | beach, teacher |
When you recognise these patterns, reading becomes easier and faster.
What Is Vocabulary?
Vocabulary is the collection of words we know and understand.
The more words you know, the easier it is to:
- understand books,
- express your ideas,
- answer questions,
- write better sentences.
Learning new words helps you become a confident reader and speaker.
Learning New Words from Context
Sometimes you may not know the meaning of a word.
Instead of stopping immediately, read the words before and after it.
These surrounding words are called context clues because they help you work out the meaning.
Example
After running the marathon, Sofia was exhausted, so she rested under a tree before walking home.
Even if you don’t know the word exhausted, you can guess that it means very tired because Sofia rested after running a marathon.
Word Families
Many words belong to the same word family.
Examples:
- act β action β active β activity
- care β careful β carefully β careless
- help β helpful β helpless β helping
Recognising word families helps you understand new words more quickly.
π Example
Read the sentence.
The ancient castle stood on top of a steep hill overlooking the village.
The word ancient means very old.
The surrounding words help us imagine that the castle has existed for a very long time.
π Real-Life Example
During a visit to a science museum, Liam saw the word interactive on an exhibit.
He noticed that visitors could press buttons and touch screens to learn more.
From the activity, he understood that interactive means allowing people to take part or interact.
This shows how experiences and context help us learn new vocabulary.
