📖 Introduction
Imagine you have just finished building a model aeroplane. Before showing it to others, you would probably check that all the pieces fit properly and that nothing is missing.
Writing is similar. Even experienced writers do not submit their first draft immediately. They read it again, improve weak ideas and correct mistakes. This process helps transform good writing into excellent writing.
🎯 What You’ll Learn
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
- explain the difference between revising and editing.
- revise writing to improve ideas and organisation.
- edit writing to correct grammar, spelling and punctuation.
- use a simple editing checklist before submitting your work.
💡 Let’s Explore
What Is Revising?
Revising means improving the content of your writing.
When revising, you focus on your ideas, not just your mistakes.
Ask yourself questions such as:
- Does my writing make sense?
- Are my ideas in the correct order?
- Have I explained my ideas clearly?
- Can I add better examples or descriptions?
- Is there any unnecessary information?
Revising helps make your writing stronger and more interesting.
What Is Editing?
Editing means correcting mistakes in your writing.
When editing, you check for:
- spelling errors,
- grammar mistakes,
- punctuation errors,
- capital letters,
- missing or repeated words,
- incorrect word choice.
Editing makes your writing neat, accurate and easy to read.

🌟 Example
Before Editing
Last saturday we visited the zoo it was fun we saw lions elephants and monkeys everyone enjoyed the trip

Last Saturday, we visited the zoo. It was fun, and we saw lions, elephants and monkeys. Everyone enjoyed the trip.
The second version is much clearer because it uses correct grammar, punctuation and capital letters.
🌍 Real-Life Example
Emily wrote a report about renewable energy. After finishing her first draft, she realised that one paragraph did not explain how solar panels work, so she added more information. She also corrected several spelling mistakes and punctuation errors before handing in her work.
Because Emily revised and edited her report carefully, it was easy to read and well organised.
