📖 Introduction
Read these two sentences carefully:
- The chef prepared the delicious meal.
- The delicious meal was prepared by the chef.
Both sentences describe the same event, but they are written differently. In the first sentence, the chef performs the action. In the second, the meal receives the action.
These are called the active voice and the passive voice. Knowing when and how to use each one will help you become a better writer and speaker.
🎯 What You’ll Learn
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
- explain the difference between active and passive voice.
- identify active and passive sentences.
- change simple active sentences into passive sentences.
- use both sentence forms correctly.
💡 Let’s Explore
What Is the Active Voice?
In the active voice, the subject performs the action.
Structure
Subject + Verb + Object
Examples
- Maya painted the picture.
- The firefighter rescued the family.
- Our class planted trees.
The subject is doing the action.
What Is the Passive Voice?
In the passive voice, the subject receives the action.
Structure
Object + form of “be” + past participle + by + Subject
Examples
- The picture was painted by Maya.
- The family was rescued by the firefighter.
- Trees were planted by our class.
The focus is now on the object instead of the person performing the action.
Active Voice and Passive Voice Compared
| Active Voice | Passive Voice |
|---|---|
| Ava wrote the letter. | The letter was written by Ava. |
| The players won the match. | The match was won by the players. |
| The scientist discovered a new species. | A new species was discovered by the scientist. |
Notice that the meaning stays the same, but the sentence structure changes.
When Do We Use the Active Voice?
We usually use the active voice when we want to highlight who performed the action.
Examples
- The doctor examined the patient.
- Liam solved the puzzle.
- Our team built the model.
Active voice is usually clearer and more direct.
When Do We Use the Passive Voice?
We often use the passive voice when:
- the person doing the action is unknown,
- the action is more important than the person,
- or we want to focus on the result.
Examples
- The museum was opened in 2010.
- The road was repaired last week.
- The lost wallet was found yesterday.
Sometimes we do not mention who performed the action.

Passive Voice
The beach was cleaned by the volunteers after the storm.

🌍 Real-Life Example
The local community organised a tree-planting exercise.
A newspaper reported:
Active Voice: Community volunteers planted over 500 trees.
Another newspaper wrote:
