📖 Introduction

Have you ever heard someone say, “Basketball is the best sport in the world!” Is that a fact or just someone’s opinion?

Now consider this statement: “Basketball is played by two teams of five players.” This can be checked and proven, so it is a fact.

When we read books, newspapers, websites or advertisements, we often come across both facts and opinions. Knowing the difference helps us decide what information is true and what information expresses someone’s personal thoughts or feelings.

In this lesson, you’ll learn how to identify facts and opinions and explain the difference between them.

🎯 What You’ll Learn

By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:

  • explain the difference between facts and opinions.
  • identify facts and opinions in a passage.
  • use evidence to support whether a statement is a fact or an opinion.
  • think critically about information you read and hear.

💡 Let’s Explore

What Is a Fact?

A fact is a statement that can be proved to be true or false using evidence.

Facts can be checked in books, dictionaries, encyclopedias or other reliable sources.

Examples

  • Water freezes at 0°C.
  • The Earth travels around the Sun.
  • There are seven days in a week.
  • Bees help pollinate many flowering plants.

These statements can be verified.

What Is an Opinion?

An opinion is what someone thinks, believes or feels.

Opinions cannot be proved true or false because different people may have different views.

Examples

  • Reading adventure stories is more exciting than reading mysteries.
  • Chocolate ice cream tastes better than vanilla.
  • Summer is the best season.
  • My school has the friendliest teachers.

These are personal beliefs or preferences.

Clues That Show an Opinion

Opinions often include words such as:

  • I think
  • I believe
  • In my opinion
  • best
  • worst
  • beautiful
  • boring
  • exciting
  • amazing
  • should

These words usually show personal feelings or judgments.

How to Tell the Difference

Ask yourself:

Can this statement be proved?

✔ Yes → It is a fact.

✔ No → It is an opinion.

🌟 Example

Read the statements.

Statement 1: Penguins cannot fly.

This can be proved.

Fact

Statement 2: Penguins are the most interesting birds.

Different people may disagree.

Opinion

🌍 Real-Life Example

Two friends visited a science museum.

Afterwards, Emma said,

“The museum opened at 9:00 a.m.”

This is a fact because it can be checked.

Her friend added,

“It was the most exciting museum I have ever visited.”

This is an opinion because it expresses a personal feeling.

Understanding the difference helped them write an accurate report about their visit.
