These steps are called the writing process.

What Is the Writing Process?

The writing process is a series of steps that writers follow to create a well-written piece of work.

It helps writers:

organise their ideas,
write clearly,
correct mistakes,
and produce their best work.

The writing process has five main stages.

The Five Stages of the Writing Process

1. Prewriting (Planning)

This is the thinking stage.

Before writing, you should:

choose a topic,
think about your audience,
gather ideas,
make notes,
create a mind map or outline.

2. Drafting

4. Editing

Editing means correcting mistakes.

Look carefully for:

spelling errors,
punctuation mistakes,
grammar mistakes,
incorrect capital letters,
missing words.

Editing makes your writing accurate and easy to read.

5. Publishing or Sharing

This is the final stage.

After checking your work, you can:

write a neat final copy,
present it to your class,
display it on a notice board,
publish it in a school magazine,
or share it online if appropriate.

A well-presented piece of writing leaves a good impression on readers.
