π Introduction
The Earth’s surface is wonderfully varied. In some places, huge mountains rise high above the land. In others, rivers flow for thousands of kilometres, vast oceans separate continents, deserts receive very little rainfall, and thick tropical rainforests support an amazing variety of plants and animals.
These are known as physical features because they occur naturally on the Earth’s surface. Learning about themβand being able to locate them on mapsβhelps us better understand the world in which we live.
π― What You’ll Learn
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
- Explain and identify major physical features of the Earth.
- Describe mountains, rivers, oceans, hot deserts and tropical rainforests.
- Give examples of important physical features around the world.
- Locate major physical features using maps.
πΊοΈ What Are Physical Features?
Physical features are naturally occurring features found on the Earth’s surface.
They are not constructed by humans.
Examples include:
- β°οΈ Mountains
- π Rivers
- π Oceans
- ποΈ Deserts
- π³ Forests
- ποΈ Lakes and valleys
Physical features differ greatly in their size, appearance, climate and location.
β°οΈ Mountains
A mountain is a natural area of land that rises high above the surrounding land.
Mountains usually have steep slopes and high elevations.
Examples of Famous Mountains
- Mount Everest β Asia
- Mount Kilimanjaro β Africa
- Mount Afadja (Afadjato) β Ghana
Mountains can influence rainfall, vegetation, settlement and human activities.
They may also attract tourists.
ποΈ Mountain Ranges
Mountains are sometimes found together in long groups or chains.
A mountain range is a group or chain of connected mountains.
Examples include:
The Himalayas
Located in Asia and containing some of the world’s highest mountains, including Mount Everest.
The Andes
Located along western South America and stretching for thousands of kilometres.
The Rocky Mountains
Found in North America.
The Alps
Located in Europe.
When studying a world map, learners should be able to identify some of these major mountain ranges.
π Rivers
A river is a natural stream of water flowing through a channel towards another body of water.
Rivers may eventually flow into:
- Lakes
- Other rivers
- Seas
- Oceans
Rivers are extremely important to people and the environment.
π§ Importance of Rivers
Rivers may provide:
- Water for homes and communities
- Water for farming and irrigation
- Fish and other resources
- Transportation in some areas
- Opportunities for tourism
- Water for generating hydroelectric power
Settlements have often developed near rivers because of the resources they provide.
π Major Rivers of the World
Some well-known rivers include:
The Nile
Located in Africa and flowing northwards into the Mediterranean Sea.
The Amazon
Located in South America and famous for the enormous volume of water it carries.
The Mississippi-Missouri System
A major river system in North America.
The Yangtze
A major river in China, Asia.
In Ghana, important rivers include the Volta, Pra, Ankobra and Tano.
π Oceans
An ocean is a vast body of salt water covering a large part of the Earth’s surface.
Oceans cover most of the Earth’s surface and separate many of the world’s continents.
There are five commonly recognised oceans.
π Pacific Ocean
The largest ocean.
π Atlantic Ocean
Located between the Americas and Europe and Africa.
π Indian Ocean
Located mainly between Africa, Asia and Australia.
π Southern Ocean
Surrounds Antarctica.
π Arctic Ocean
Located around the North Pole.
π¬π Ghana and the Atlantic Ocean
Ghana is located on the western coast of Africa.
Its southern coastline meets the Gulf of Guinea, which forms part of the Atlantic Ocean.
This location supports activities such as:
- Fishing
- Shipping
- Trade
- Tourism
Ghana’s coastal location therefore has both geographical and economic importance.
ποΈ Hot Deserts
A hot desert is a very dry region that receives little rainfall and commonly experiences high daytime temperatures.
Vegetation is usually limited because water is scarce.
Plants and animals living in deserts often have special adaptations that help them survive dry conditions.
βοΈ Major Hot Deserts
Sahara Desert
The Sahara is located in North Africa.
It is the world’s largest hot desert.
Arabian Desert
Located mainly on the Arabian Peninsula in Asia.
Kalahari
Located in Southern Africa.
Australian Deserts
Large desert areas are also found across the interior of Australia.
On a world map, desert regions are often shown using particular colours or shading explained in the map key.
π³ Tropical Rainforests
A tropical rainforest is a dense forest found mainly in hot, wet tropical regions that receive high amounts of rainfall.
Tropical rainforests usually contain:
- Tall trees
- Thick vegetation
- Many plant species
- Many animal species
- Warm temperatures
- High rainfall
They are among the world’s richest natural environments in terms of biodiversity.
π§οΈ Major Tropical Rainforest Regions
π³ Amazon Rainforest
Located mainly in South America.
It is the world’s largest tropical rainforest.
π³ Congo Basin Rainforest
Located in Central Africa.
It is one of the world’s largest areas of tropical rainforest.
π³ Southeast Asian Rainforests
Tropical rainforests are also found in parts of countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia.
Ghana also has tropical forest areas, particularly in the southern part of the country.
π Comparing the Major Physical Features
| Physical Feature | Main Characteristic | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Mountain | Land rising high above surrounding areas | Mount Kilimanjaro |
| Mountain range | Chain or group of mountains | Himalayas |
| River | Flowing natural watercourse | Nile |
| Ocean | Vast body of salt water | Atlantic Ocean |
| Hot desert | Very dry area with little rainfall | Sahara |
| Tropical rainforest | Dense forest in a hot, wet region | Amazon Rainforest |
πΊοΈ Locating Physical Features on Maps
Knowing the names of physical features is useful, but Social Studies also requires us to know where they are located.
A physical map can help us identify features such as:
- Mountains
- Rivers
- Oceans
- Deserts
- Forests
When using a map, remember the mapping skills from the previous lesson.
π Step 1: Check the Map Key
The map key or legend explains the colours and symbols used.
For example, a map might use:
Blue β Water
Green β Forest or vegetation
Brown β Higher land
However, colours can have different meanings on different maps, so always check the key.
π§ Step 2: Use Direction
Remember the four cardinal directions:
NORTH
β
WEST β + β EAST
β
SOUTH
Direction helps describe where a physical feature is located.
For example:
- The Sahara Desert is in northern Africa.
- The Atlantic Ocean lies south of Ghana.
- The Andes are found along the western side of South America.
π Step 3: Identify Continents
Knowing the continents makes locating physical features easier.
For example:
| Feature | Location |
|---|---|
| Himalayas | Asia |
| Andes | South America |
| Sahara Desert | Africa |
| Amazon Rainforest | South America |
| Congo Basin Rainforest | Africa |
| Rocky Mountains | North America |
Instead of simply memorising names, connect each feature with its location.
π§ Try This Map Challenge
Can you match each physical feature with its location?
1. Sahara Desert β Africa
2. Amazon Rainforest β South America
3. Himalayas β Asia
4. Rocky Mountains β North America
5. Congo Basin Rainforest β Africa
Being able to make these connections is an important mapping skill.
π± Why Physical Features Matter
Physical features influence how people live.
For example:
Rivers
May provide water, transport, fish and hydroelectric power.
Mountains
May influence rainfall, farming, transportation and tourism.
Oceans
Support fishing, transportation and international trade.
Forests
Provide habitats, natural resources and environmental benefits.
Deserts
Influence settlement and economic activities because water and vegetation may be limited.
Physical geography and human life are therefore closely connected.
π Key Words
Physical Feature: A naturally occurring feature of the Earth’s surface.
Mountain: Land that rises high above its surroundings.
Mountain Range: A group or chain of connected mountains.
River: A natural stream of flowing water.
Ocean: A vast body of salt water.
Hot Desert: A very dry region receiving little rainfall and commonly experiencing high daytime temperatures.
Tropical Rainforest: A dense forest found in hot, wet tropical regions with high rainfall.
π Lesson Summary
The Earth has many major physical features, including mountains, rivers, oceans, hot deserts and tropical rainforests.
Mountains rise above surrounding land and may form mountain ranges such as the Himalayas and Andes. Rivers such as the Nile and Amazon carry water across large areas, while the Earth’s five oceans form enormous bodies of salt water.
Hot deserts such as the Sahara receive very little rainfall, while tropical rainforests such as the Amazon and Congo Basin receive high rainfall and contain dense vegetation.
Using physical maps, map keys and directions helps us locate these features and understand how they influence human activities and the environment.
