Calculating With Negative Numbers: Order of Operations With a Twist
A freezer is at −18°C. The power goes off, and the temperature rises by 3°C every hour.
What is the temperature after 4 hours?
The rise is 4 × 3 = 12°C, so the temperature is −18 + 12 = −6°C. Notice the order: work out 4 × 3 first, then add it to −18. Order of operations works exactly the same with negative numbers. You just have to watch the signs.
Master the essentials
| Signs | Answer | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Same | positive | −4 × −3 = 12 −12 ÷ −3 = 4 |
| Different | negative | 4 × −3 = −12 −12 ÷ 3 = −4 |
Same signs → positive. Different signs → negative.
Adding and subtracting
Use a number line. Adding a negative moves left. Subtracting a negative moves right: − (−) is the same as +.
−4 − (−9) = −4 + 9 = 5
Multiplying and dividing
Same signs give a positive answer. Different signs give a negative answer.
−6 × −7 = 42 · −36 ÷ 4 = −9
Order of operations
Brackets, then powers, then × and ÷, then + and −. Negatives follow the same order.
5 + 2 × (−4) = 5 + (−8) = −3
Powers of negatives
An even number of negatives multiplied gives a positive; an odd number gives a negative.
(−3)³ = −3 × −3 × −3 = −27
Brackets matter
(−3)² means −3 × −3 = 9. But −3² means −(3²) = −9: only the 3 is squared.
(−3)² = 9 · −3² = −9
Check the size
Ignore the signs and estimate the size first, then decide the sign.
−42 ÷ 6: size 7, signs different → −7
See it done
1. Work out −3 + 4 × (−2).
- Multiply first: 4 × (−2) = −8 (different signs).
- Then add: −3 + (−8) = −11.
−11
2. Work out (−5)² − 3 × (−2).
- Power first: (−5)² = −5 × −5 = 25.
- Then multiply: 3 × (−2) = −6.
- Then subtract: 25 − (−6) = 25 + 6 = 31.
31
3. Work out (−18 + 6) ÷ (−3).
- Brackets first: −18 + 6 = −12.
- Then divide: −12 ÷ (−3) = 4 (same signs).
4
Common mistake: Mixing up (−3)² and −3². The brackets say "square the whole of −3": (−3)² = −3 × −3 = 9. Without brackets, only the 3 is squared and the minus stays: −3² = −9.
10 questions with instant feedback
Choose the correct answer. Decide the order first, then the signs. Questions 1–3 are warm-ups, 4–7 are at exam standard and 8–10 are challenge questions. After you answer, the feedback shows the full solution.

The golf card
In golf, a score below par is negative and above par is positive. Zara's scores for four rounds were −3, +2, −5 and −1. The lowest score is best.
1. What is her total score for the four rounds?
2. What is her mean score per round?
3. Her friend Tom's total is −4. Who did better, and by how much?
- −3 + 2 − 5 − 1 = −7.
- −7 ÷ 4 = −1.75 per round.
- Zara, because −7 is lower than −4. She is better by −4 − (−7) = 3 shots.
